FAQ
Frequently Asked QuestionsAt a Glance: Why Coverage is Complicated (and How We Help)
-
Approval ≠ Full Payment: Getting an approval letter is only half the battle. Without the right negotiation, insurers often pay only a fraction of the cost, leaving you with massive bills. We fight for full financial coverage, not just a “yes” on paper.
-
DIY is Risky: Insurance policies are intentionally confusing. One wrong word in your initial request can lead to a permanent denial. We have successfully guided over 1,400 women by knowing exactly what insurers need to see.
-
Safety is Non-Negotiable: We exclusively work with Board-Certified Plastic Surgeons. We vet every provider to ensure they prioritize patient safety and ethical billing over profit.
-
The AI Advantage: You cannot rely on generic tools like ChatGPT to write medical appeals. LCC uses proprietary, expert-reviewed AI methods backed by years of data to build the strongest possible case for your surgery.
General Coverage Questions
Why do I need an advocate? Can’t I get covered on my own?
While it is possible to apply on your own, it is risky. Lipedema is not treated like other diseases by insurance companies because coverage is new, and insurers often deny claims to avoid the high costs of surgery. Decisions can be inconsistent—two women with the same insurer and surgeon often get different results.
LCC protects you by getting it right the first time.
-
Experience: We have helped over 1,400 women request coverage. We know exactly what triggers a denial and how to prevent it.
-
Strategy: We help you meet and exceed insurer requirements through a focused request package.
-
Avoid Appeals: Our goal is to avoid the appeals process entirely. Appeals can take months and are often reviewed by doctors who do not understand Lipedema. If a denial happens, we use our high-level contacts to push for a re-review rather than a formal appeal.
Can I try to get covered on my own and hire LCC later if I am denied?
You can, but we strongly advise against it. The membership fee is the same whether you join before or after a denial, but fixing a denial is much harder than preventing one.
-
The Danger of Appeals: Once you are denied, you enter a formal appeals process. These are often “rubber-stamped” denials or reviewed by doctors hostile to Lipedema surgery.
-
Early Intervention is Key: If you are approved on your own but cannot secure a fair payment agreement with a Single Case Agreement, you may still incur significant costs. LCC’s data, connections, and experience are most effective when we manage the process from the beginning.
I see women on social media being easily covered. Is it really that hard?
Social media only tells half the story. Just because a patient says they are “covered” does not mean the surgery was fully covered by insurance.
-
The “Out-of-Network” Trap: An insurer might agree to “cover” a surgery but only pay a fraction of the cost. For example, they might pay $2,000 of a $20,000 bill, leaving you to pay the remaining $18,000.
-
Hidden Cash Costs: Some surgeons require cash upfront because they expect low insurance reimbursement.
-
The LCC Difference: We don’t just look for approval letters; we look for Single Case Agreements. We ensure the insurer agrees to pay the surgeon a fair rate so you aren’t left with a massive surprise bill.
Can I use AI (like ChatGPT) to help get surgery covered?
While this is the emerging age of AI, relying on public tools like ChatGPT to write your own prior authorization request or appeal is dangerous.
-
The Risk of “DIY” AI: Generic AI tools often “hallucinate,” inventing medical policies or legal precedents that do not exist. Submitting a letter with false information can destroy your credibility. Furthermore, public AI cannot analyze your specific medical records to find the unique “functional impairment” arguments required to overturn a Lipedema denial.
- HIPAA Limits Available Data: Under HIPAA, most health insurance coverage data is not accessible to AI. Your answers are not based on actual, firsthand patient data. LCC has access to years of coverage data that no AI can access to create prior authorization requests and appeals.
Surgeons & Providers Questions
Why can’t my surgeon’s staff handle the insurance for me?
Your surgeon’s job is to treat you; our only job is to get that treatment paid for. Most surgical practices, even university hospitals, have limited resources to fight complex insurance battles.
-
Different Incentives: Many plastic surgery practices are accustomed to “cash pay” patients. They may not have the expertise to navigate staged surgeries, network exceptions, or aggressive appeals.
-
Our Connections: LCC works with more than 20 plastic surgeons and maintains direct legal and clinical contacts with major insurance companies. We can often solve problems with a single phone call that a surgeon’s office cannot.
-
Total Coverage: While a surgeon may be willing to accept a partial payment or cash, LCC fights until your surgery is safe, effective, and fully covered.
Does LCC restrict which surgeons I can work with?
We prioritize patient safety above all else. Therefore, LCC only works with Board-Certified Plastic Surgeons.
-
Safety First: We avoid non-plastic-surgeon “lipedema experts” because we believe Board-Certified Plastic Surgeons deliver the safest outcomes for patients.
-
Ethical Billing: We vet surgeons to ensure they do not engage in excessive billing practices that hurt your chances of coverage and will undermine coverage for all women.
-
The Right Fit: Even among plastic surgeons, not all understand that Lipedema is “not just lipo.” We help connect you with ethical, skilled surgeons who put patients first. Unfortunately, not all surgeons put patients above their bottom line.
We will gladly work with any surgeon who meets the above criteria and who respects the needs of their patients and the lipedema community.
(See our blog for more on why we recommend Plastic Surgeons as the safest choice.)
Our Process Questions
How does LCC actually support me?
Our advocacy is a comprehensive 3-step process designed to save you money and stress:
- The Perfect Request: We guide you through creating a bulletproof submission. We provide custom cover letters, review your documentation, and ensure your package is tailored to your specific health plan to avoid denial.
- Compliance & Review: If an insurer denies a claim, we ensure their decision complies with state and federal laws. If necessary, we leverage our contacts for a proper re-review or handle the complex external appeal process for you.
- Payment & Scheduling: If you are seeing an out-of-network surgeon, we facilitate the Single Case Agreement to ensure they are paid fairly and timely. If an agreement cannot be reached, we help you transition quickly to a skilled in-network plastic surgeon.
Beyond these steps, we continually advocate on behalf of all lipedema patients to insurance companies, medical societies, and state and federal regulators to make the coverage and payment processes fairer and more equitable.
What are my chances of getting covered with LCC?
Your chances are significantly higher with LCC than on your own.
-
High Success Rate: Almost all of our members get some or all of their surgery covered on their first request.
-
Financial Protection: We don’t just get you approved; we fight to ensure the insurer pays the bill. Getting over $100,000 in surgery covered is difficult, but our data and connections make it possible.
-
Persistence: If you are denied, we have strategies to keep fighting—whether through appeals, compliance plans, or transitions to other insurers or surgeons.
Does LCC offer payment plans?
Yes, we do. We accept all major credit cards as well as Klarna and Afterpay. You can choose these options in checkout.
